Policing Trolls and Instigators: The Problem of the Online Comment Field

On Dec. 30, 2011, NPR’s On the Media aired two stories on the ubiquitous and problematic Comment field on websites.  How do we maintain a democracy of opinion by allowing people to respond to online postings without allowing the conversation to devolve into the combative, the offensive, or the trivial?  Should media producers be expected police, edit, or curate the Comment field in addition to the already significant burden of producing the content that incited the discussion?
